KHAYELITSHA DISTRICT HOSPITAL
Role: Architects | Year: 2008-2012 | Location: Khayelitsha, Cape Town
Khayelitsha District Hospital is a 230-bed primary health care facility. It redefined the standard of public health care in South Africa and is the benchmark for current UISS design norms.
Khayelitsha District Hospital is located in Khayelitsha, an expansive suburb that is home to 500,000 people east of Cape Town. Khayelitsha experiences one of the highest rates of HIV/ AIDS in South Africa with complications such as TB resistance being a serious problem. The hospital has been designed with this in mind and includes and OPD department and day ward specifically for HIV/AIDS and TB cases.
Nurses’ stations and passages are pressurised to discourage cross–infection from patient areas and air circulation is from inwards – outwards.
